What's in the price
Most of the price is the fuel and the oil supplier's delivery cost and margin. On top come carbon tax, the NORA levy that pays for Ireland's emergency oil stocks, and VAT at 13.5%, which is charged on the taxes too.
- Carbon tax: 16.081c a litre (Revenue's rate from 15 April), or €160.81 on 1,000 litres before VAT.
- NORA levy: 0.1c a litre, a reduced rate until 31 October.
- VAT: about €195 of a typical €1639 order for 1,000 litres.

Common questions
Is home heating oil the same as kerosene?
Yes. Home heating oil in Ireland is kerosene, so a heating oil price and a kerosene price are the same thing. Green diesel (marked gas oil) is a different fuel with a different tax rate.
How much is 500 litres of kerosene?
The cheapest 500 litres we found in the last day was €799 in Monaghan, or 159.8c a litre. In a typical county the cheapest 500L order costs about €824 (164.8c a litre).
Why is the price per litre lower for bigger orders?
The delivery costs the oil supplier about the same whether the truck drops 500 or 1,000 litres, so a bigger order spreads that cost over more litres. Today a typical 1,000L order works out at 163.9c a litre, against 164.8c for 500L.
How often do kerosene prices change?
Each oil supplier sets its own price and can change it on any day. Comparing the same 29 oil suppliers a week apart, the median 500L price went from €810 on 5 October to €843 on 12 October. Every price on this page shows when we last checked it.
