Green diesel tax changes in 2027
Budget 2027 set out when the temporary tax relief on marked gas oil ends. If you have tank space, filling before each step can save on that load, though prices also move with the oil market.

- From 1 May 2027: Mineral Oil Tax on marked gas oil of 23.98c a litre, before VAT. The deferred marked gas oil carbon increase takes effect.

Who can use green diesel?
Marked gas oil is only for qualifying uses, such as agricultural machinery working off the public road and heating. Anything driven on a public road needs road diesel. Revenue tests fuel tanks for the marker. Read Revenue's marked gas oil guidance and our guide to kerosene and gas oil.
Questions about green diesel prices
What is the price of green diesel in Ireland today?
Tankful checks the prices Irish oil suppliers publish for green diesel twice a day. Check back shortly for today's figure.
Is green diesel the same as marked gas oil?
Yes. Green diesel is the everyday name for marked gas oil: diesel with a reduced rate of Mineral Oil Tax, chemically marked and dyed green by Revenue so misuse in road vehicles can be detected.
Why is 500 litres dearer per litre than 1,000 litres?
Delivery costs the oil supplier much the same whatever the drop, so smaller orders carry more of that cost per litre. Farms buying several thousand litres a year usually get a better rate by asking for a quote on the whole year.
When does tax on green diesel go up?
From 28 February 2027: Mineral Oil Tax on marked gas oil of 21.95c a litre, before VAT. Marked gas oil's non-carbon rate (5.4c a litre including VAT) is restored in full. From 1 May 2027: Mineral Oil Tax on marked gas oil of 23.98c a litre, before VAT. The deferred marked gas oil carbon increase takes effect.
Do these prices include VAT?
They are the prices oil suppliers advertise on their websites for delivery, which in Ireland normally include VAT at 13.5%. Always confirm the final price, delivery area and any charges with the oil supplier.
