Why the prices differ: tax
In Ireland, every litre of kerosene carries carbon tax (Mineral Oil Tax), the NORA levy, and 13.5% VAT. On the typical Donegal price of €845, that works out at €80.41 carbon tax, €0.50 NORA levy and €100.51 VAT: €181.42 in all.
In Northern Ireland, heating oil for home use is charged VAT at the reduced rate of 5%. Deliveries of up to 2,300 litres get the reduced rate whatever the use, according to HMRC VAT Notice 701/19, section 6.
Budget 2027 will cut Ireland's carbon tax on heating oil, but Revenue has not yet set the start date. Read what the carbon tax cut means. Oil supplier margins, delivery distances and local competition also differ on each side of the border.
Delivery areas
Each oil supplier sets its own delivery area. A price published in Northern Ireland is not a sign that the oil supplier delivers to a Donegal address. Compare the oil suppliers that deliver to your home, and confirm the total with them before you order.
