How much does an oil boiler service cost in Ireland?
Irish sources we checked put a routine oil boiler service at about €60 to €100. Your price depends on where you live, the boiler, and whether parts are needed. Here is what the visit should include, how often to book it, and how to avoid paying for a rushed job.

What does an oil boiler service cost?
Few Irish technicians publish prices, so treat any figure as a guide and get a quote. These are the published figures we could check on 10 October 2026:
| Source | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Selectra boiler service guide (updated 11 September 2026) | €60 to €100 | A national range for oil boilers, not a quote |
| The Service Team, Tuam, Co. Galway | €100 | Annual service including a new nozzle. Other parts agreed before fitting |
Prices vary by technician and county. A low headline price can leave out parts or travel, and a higher one may include them. Ask what is included before you book.
What changes the price?
- Where you live and how far the technician has to travel.
- The type and age of the boiler. Older boilers and range cookers can take longer, and parts for them can cost more.
- Parts. A standard service usually includes a new nozzle and filter, but pumps, electrodes and seals are extra.
- Whether the boiler is working. Some technicians, including The Service Team above, will not service a boiler that has a fault. That becomes a repair visit, which is priced separately.
- Extras such as a tank check, a carbon monoxide alarm or a cover plan.
When you ring for a quote, ask: what is the price, what parts are included, is VAT included, and will you give me a written service record at the end?
What should a service include?
A proper oil boiler service takes time. Selectra's guide lists safety checks, leak detection, flue gas analysis and a check of the storage tank for water. In practice you should expect the technician to:
- Clean the heat exchanger and combustion chamber of soot.
- Replace the burner nozzle and clean or replace the oil filter.
- Check the electrodes, pump pressure and seals.
- Run a flue gas test with an analyser and set the burner for clean, efficient combustion.
- Check the flue, the oil supply line and the fire valve.
- Look over the tank, pipework and fill point for leaks or damage.
- Give you a written record of what was done and the readings taken.
If the visit takes 20 minutes and you get no paperwork, it was probably not a full service. Keep the records. They help when you sell the house, make a warranty claim or rent the property.
How often should you service an oil boiler?
Once a year. The NSAI advises having oil and gas boilers serviced every year as part of protecting your home from carbon monoxide. Some makers set their own intervals for warranty, so check the manual too.
When is the best time to book?
Book in late spring or summer, and before October if you can. SEAI recommends a summer service. Technicians get busy once the weather turns and the heating comes on, and breakdowns jump the queue. A service in the quiet months is easier to book and gives time to fix anything it finds before you need the heat.
Make sure there is oil in the tank on the day. The technician needs to run the boiler to test and set it. If you are low, see our guide on checking your oil tank level first.
Does a service save on oil?
It can. Soot on the heat exchanger stops heat getting into the water, so more oil is burned for the same warmth. SEAI says a boiler service can save you at least 5% on heating costs later in the year (SEAI: service your boiler). The real saving depends on how dirty and badly set up the boiler was.
Use the visit to ask about your controls too. If your timer and thermostat are old, SEAI pays a €700 grant towards upgraded heating controls for homes built and occupied before 2011, and you must apply before work starts (SEAI heating controls grant). Our guide to heating oil grants covers the other supports.
Why use an OFTEC-registered technician?
OFTEC registers oil heating technicians in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It says servicing and repair are not covered by building regulations but should always be done by a competent person, and that its registered businesses follow set procedures (OFTEC: why choose a registered technician). Registration is not a legal requirement for servicing, but it gives you some assurance that someone has checked the technician's work.
Before you book, look up the business name on OFTEC's technician search. For the Republic of Ireland you search by county. The search only shows businesses that are registered now.
Landlords: what do the rules say?
The Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2019 say heating appliances in a rented home must be kept in a safe condition and in good working order and repair. The home must have suitable fume removal, and carbon monoxide alarms where necessary. The regulations do not set a fixed service interval. A yearly service with a written record is the plain way to show the boiler is maintained.
Your local authority enforces these standards, and the Department of Housing's minimum standards page summarises them. If you rent and the boiler has not been serviced, ask your landlord in writing. If you have concerns about safety, contact your local authority.
Stay safe between services
Fit a carbon monoxide alarm that meets EN 50291 in the room with the boiler and near bedrooms, as the NSAI advises. If the alarm sounds, or you get headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease outside, turn the boiler off, get everyone out into fresh air, and call 112 or 999. Do not use the boiler again until a technician has checked it. For a boiler that has stopped, see oil boiler not working. For a smell of oil, see kerosene smell in the house.
Common questions
How much is an oil boiler service in Ireland?
Selectra's Irish boiler guide, updated September 2026, puts an oil boiler service at €60 to €100. One Galway technician publishes a flat €100 that includes a new nozzle. Parts, repairs and call-out distance can add to the bill, so ask for the price in writing first.
How often should an oil boiler be serviced?
Once a year. The NSAI advises having oil and gas boilers serviced every year, and SEAI recommends a yearly service before the heating season.
Does my oil boiler technician need to be OFTEC registered?
Servicing is not covered by building regulations, but OFTEC says it should always be done by a competent person. Choosing an OFTEC-registered technician means the business is assessed and inspected. You can check a name on OFTEC's register.
Does a landlord have to service an oil boiler?
The rented housing standards regulations say heating appliances must be kept in a safe condition and in good working order and repair. They do not name a service interval. A yearly service is the usual way to show the boiler is maintained. Check with your local authority, which enforces the standards.

A serviced boiler still needs oil. Use the heating oil planner to work out when to order, then compare oil suppliers near you.
