How much heating oil does a house use?
It depends on the house, the boiler, the weather and how you heat, so a bedroom count is a poor guide. Work it out from your own tank: oil at the start, plus oil delivered, minus oil left at the end, over the same days. For example, a house using 10 litres a day would get about 50 days from 500 litres, and one using 5 litres a day would get about 100.
Oil boiler grants and SEAI supports
No. Citizens Information says the SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme does not cover replacing an oil or gas boiler, and the Warmer Homes Scheme has not fitted new fossil-fuel boilers since 1 January 2025. SEAI does pay €700 towards better heating controls for an existing boiler.
Up to €14,500 for a water-based heat pump in a house, or €11,500 in an apartment. That includes a €2,000 boiler scrappage grant for removing the oil boiler. The home must have been built and occupied before 2021.
- Warmer Homes Scheme (free upgrades): Free insulation and other upgrades, with solar panels and a battery from 6 October 2026
- SEAI insulation and heating controls grants: Attic insulation €1,100 to €2,000 (up to €2,500 for some welfare recipients), wall insulation up to €8,000, heating controls €700
- SEAI heat pump grant, with boiler scrappage: Up to €14,500 for a house and €11,500 for an apartment (water-based systems), including a €2,000 boiler scrappage grant

How much is 500L of heating oil in Ireland?
The cheapest 500L price we found in each county ranges from €799.00 to €845.00, across 26 counties checked in the past 24 hours. Your own price depends on your supplier and address.
Is a 1,000-litre fill always better value than 300 or 500 litres?
Not always. A bigger fill usually costs less per litre, but you pay more upfront and need room in the tank. Compare the total and the price per litre for each size.
What should I confirm before ordering?
The right fuel and amount, the total for your address including VAT and any delivery or payment charges, the delivery day, and access to your tank.
Why is a county price missing?
We only show a price we found in the past 24 hours for that county and fill size. If we have none, the county page still lists the oil suppliers who deliver there.
Should I wait for a lower price?
If your tank is low, order now and allow a few days for delivery. If you can wait, a price alert emails you when prices reach your target. The tank planner can help you work out when to order.
