Looking after your heating oil tank
Check the gauge and plan a delivery before oil runs low. Tank readings are approximate; use the planner to estimate space and ask the supplier to confirm a safe fill.
Arrange tank and oil-heating inspections with a suitably qualified technician. OFTEC provides a public technician search and consumer guidance. A supplier listing on Tankful is not a technician qualification or accreditation.
If you notice a suspected leak or damage, seek professional advice promptly and tell your supplier before a delivery. Keep children and pets away from spilled oil. Follow the relevant environmental authority’s guidance for your nation; do not attempt a repair from a price-comparison guide.
Buying heating oil in the UK
Domestic kerosene, delivery access and support for your household all matter alongside the price.
VAT on your heating oil
Qualifying domestic heating oil uses 5% VAT. Larger domestic deliveries do not automatically become business purchases. Confirm the rate and all charges on your quote.
Read HMRC guidanceExtra help in cold weather
If someone in your home is 75 or older, ask a participating oil supplier about UKIFDA's free Cold Weather Priority scheme. Register again when you change supplier. It does not guarantee immediate delivery.
Check the priority schemeA local supplier relationship
Compare the same kerosene, litres and delivery window. Tell the supplier about narrow access, a smaller tanker or other delivery needs before agreeing the full price. Check whether different brands belong to the same group.
