Buying heating oil in the UK
Check which fuel your boiler needs; do not substitute a different fuel based on price. Ask suppliers for the same number of litres, delivery deadline and tanker access, then compare final delivered totals in pounds.
Check whether VAT is included. Qualifying domestic heating oil normally has 5% VAT. Do not assume a larger domestic delivery automatically attracts 20%; ask the supplier to confirm the treatment for your use.
Before paying, confirm the legal seller, your full delivery address, total including charges, delivery date and any access restrictions. An online reference price can change before an order is accepted. Keep the supplier’s confirmation and terms.
If delivery is urgent or someone at home is vulnerable, tell the supplier directly. Ask about UKIFDA’s Cold Weather Priority scheme where relevant; membership or a priority flag does not guarantee a particular delivery date.

Domestic kerosene, delivery access and support for your household all matter alongside the price.
VAT on your heating oil
Qualifying domestic heating oil uses 5% VAT. Larger domestic deliveries do not automatically become business purchases. Confirm the rate and all charges on your quote.

If someone in your home is 75 or older, ask a participating oil supplier about UKIFDA's free Cold Weather Priority scheme. Register again when you change supplier. It does not guarantee immediate delivery.

Compare the same kerosene, litres and delivery window. Tell the supplier about narrow access, a smaller tanker or other delivery needs before agreeing the full price. Check whether different brands belong to the same group.
